STEER CLEAR OF NEGATIVE OFFICE POLITICS
Office Politics have become an accepted and integral part of modern working life. People use them to form key relationships, build collaborative working partnerships and to gain promotion. However, some types of office politics can be negative and damaging and this is the kind of behaviour you should avoid.
Some people love to gossip and complain at work but this can have a negative effect on team dynamics: encouraging or participating in this type of behaviour, could get you noticed for all the wrong reasons. Instead, spread positivity and actively improve morale with your positive outlook and can-do attitude.
THREE STEPS TO AVOIDING THE NEGATIVE AND PROMOTING THE POSITIVE:
1. DON’T REACT TO COMPLAINERS: Next time Rachel from accounts starts telling you about how the boss has it in for her. Nod, smile and walk away. If not provoking a reaction, she will be unlikely to seek you out again the next time she wants to sound off. And there will be a next time.
2. TURN NEGATIVES INTO POSITIVES: When Phil in sales has a less than complimentary story to tell you about Reece on reception, turn it into a positive by telling him about the time Reece gave you some good advice or helped you with a work task. This will bring positivity into the conversation and help colleagues to recognize the value others bring to the department.
3. DON’T ENCOURAGE GOSSIPERS: When Rebecca from finance seeks you out to give her account of how your manager messed up in a meeting, change the subject by asking her something about herself that is unrelated to work – how her weekend was/where she is going on holiday/how the family are. ANYTHING that steers her away from her original topic of conversation.
Follow these steps and present yourself as a true professional with a positive attitude, actively improving morale and investing time and effort into creating a more efficient workplace.
